Chances and Participation

SAM_0601.JPGOn October 31st, 2000, the Security Council of the United Nations unanimously passed the Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security. The resolution demands to protect girls and women in conflict areas from sexual violence and abuse, to safeguard their rights, and to engage them in reconstruction, mediation and peace negotiations.

But today, implementation is still far behind. Woman hardly occupy any key positions in politics, media or the economy of post-war states. They only have a small influence in society, and their needs and ideas about the future are not taken into consideration. Especially in patriarchical societies, women are pushed back into antiquated gender roles and their rights are not respected.

Women have to be included in rebuilding society, because they act an important part in creating and preserving peace. They are often the first ones to take steps towards reconciliation and express understanding and solidarity in times of crisis. They educate the children and thus shape the values of future generations and they play an important role in the reconstruction of socity.

AMICA supports experienced and competent partner-organizations which advocate for women and women's rights. In campaigns and lobbying activities they discuss equal opportunities and demand equal treatment in public life, and the empowerment of women in key positions.
